Stone Ashdown Directorship

We wish to appoint the Stone Ashdown Director of the CMJR. The post
holder’s principal responsibilities will be to develop the Centre,
working closely with the existing Academic Director and other existing
CMJR staff.

Possible areas of specialisation may include any of the following:

Philosophy and thought (modern and medieval), modern history (18th c.
to the present), peace and conflict studies, politics of the Middle
East and Islamic world, Jews in the Islamic world, ethnography and
ethno-musicology, Jewish and Muslim communities in Britain.

You should have completed a PhD or equivalent higher degree. We are
looking for someone from the UK or Overseas, ideally with a strong
publications record, or the demonstrable potential to deliver this in
the near future. Experience of work with international learners, and
of interdisciplinary teaching and research will be an advantage.

This post is offered on a full-time basis and represents an exciting
opportunity for an enthusiastic and experienced academic to join a
pioneering and innovative Centre.

The appointment will be for three years in the first instance with the
possibility of renewal. Salary will be £32,500 plus pension.

The Centre for the Study of Muslim-Jewish Relations (CMJR), is part of
the Woolf Institute, based at Wesley House, Cambridge
(www.woolf.cam.ac.uk/cmjr). The CMJR is dedicated to the academic
study of Muslim-Jewish relations.

The aims of CMJR include the promotion of deeper attitudes of mutual
respect and understanding in the encounter between Islam and Judaism,
to develop the study of Muslim-Jewish relations as an academic
discipline in its own right; to combat prejudice and ignorance through
education, research, and dialogue; and to offer its educational
programme to a wide audience and particularly in parts of the world
where it is greatly needed.

CMJR sits alongside the Centre for the Study of Jewish-Christian
Relations (CJCR, www.woolf.cam.ac.uk/cjcr) and under the auspices of
the Woolf Institute.  It is envisaged that there will be collaboration
between the two Centres.

The successful candidate for the post will be expected to contribute
to the existing teaching programme both conventionally and via
e-learning, and to contribute to developing new courses and intensive
educational programmes such as a summer school and broader-based
programmes. Depending on the new appointee’s specialism – we are open
to a wide range of disciplines – he or she will also be required to
make a contribution to the team teaching of undergraduate level
programmes in the Cambridge Theological Federation, principally a BA
(Anglia Ruskin University) and a BTh (University of Cambridge) degree.
The appointee will also be expected to participate in the planning and
teaching of other courses where the study of Muslim-Jewish relations
is featured, which may include postgraduate courses in the Study of
Muslim-Jewish Relations.


Research

All academic members of CMJR are required to be active in research and
publication, whether personally or collaboratively. CMJR holds regular
seminars and conferences, where the work of academics from within and
outside the Centre is presented and discussed. Staff are encouraged to
attend the national and international conferences of relevant
professional associations.


The new appointee should have:

- A PhD or equivalent higher degree in a specialism relevant to the
academic field of Muslim-Jewish Relations.

- At least two years full time or equivalent teaching experience in a
Higher Education environment: experience of taught postgraduate
programmes is preferable.

- Experience of working with a wide range of learners, including
international students and mature students, and those with varied
educational and disciplinary backgrounds.

- IT literacy: preferably, experience of working with a Virtual
Learning Environment (VLE), as a course writer and/or tutor.

- A proven ability to carry out and publish academic research of high quality.

- Sound administrative and organisational skills.
- Excellent communication skills.


Essential Personal Qualities: the new appointee should have:

- The ability to establish and maintain good working relationships
with students, colleagues and external departments and other bodies.

- Ability to work independently and as part of a small team.

- Commitment to providing quality programmes at all levels.

- A flexible, responsive approach appropriate to working in a small
organisation.

- Sound professional judgement and integrity.
