According to the Quran, Did the Afghani people have the right to defend themselves against the Russian attack on 1979?

No. This case has nothing to do with real Islamic Jihad. Afghani people in that time were politically divided into two parties, the communists and the others. The Soviet Union helped the Afghani communists by invading Afghanistan. This Russian invade was supported by the communist Afghans, while the others were supported by the U.S, Saudis and fanatic Arabs who called it a holly war. After the withdrawal of the Russian troops, the war continued between the Afghani communist regime and the others. Even after the collapse of the communist regime the so called Mujahedeen fought each others.

All the Afghans are Muslims. But they are different sects and cults, some of them are Sunni, others are Shiites and Sufi. Even inside the one sect you find different groups, like Talebans who are fanatic Salafi Wahaby group among the Sunni. Afghani people are also many different ethnic groups; most of them are Bashtone and Tajik. More over, they are different tribes inside every group.

They usually fight each other under many flags. Islam is used among these flags while it has nothing to do with all this bloodsheds. Some Afghani leaders change their flags according to their different political situations, killing the innocent people all the time under different mottoes. General Dohstom, the Tajik leader was communist, then he became Islamist, then he became against the Taliban, the so –called pure Muslims.

Islam has nothing to do with this Afghani case.  It is political war for the vanity of this life.

2- Was there any another option for the Muslim World in that problem of Afghanistan?

• Yes. War in the Islamic jurisprudence is the last option. The general rule is the peaceful solution which includes forgiveness and reconciliation, while the fight is the exception. Suppose this Islamic peaceful solution was used against the Russian occupation in 1979, it would save hundred thousands of lives, and we would not hear about Taliban and Ossama Ben Laden and September 11. Remember, the Soviet Union itself and its satellites collapsed peacefully.
