News from the Global Peace Festival Foundation

The Global Peace Festival Foundation is engaged in a range of community-based development initiatives in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. One important dimension of GPFF's strategic vision is the involvement of partners from government, civil society, business, and faith-based groups in project development and peace-building. GPFF and its partners have hosted a number of ground-breaking conferences where informed analysis and sharing of best practices support effective and innovative field operations.

In November, GPFF will host the annual Global Peace Convention in Seoul, Korea, where scholars, development experts, and policy makers will explore the latest civil society approaches to bridging the division of North and South on the Korean peninsula. In Brazil, the Second Global Peace Leadership Conference for Latin America on October 20 drew the participation of seven former Latin American presidents in forging regional strategies to meet food and energy needs.

Earlier in October, the National Faith Leaders Summit in Washington, DC provided a forum for diverse American faith leaders to advance an agenda for American renewal based on the common values and "self-evident truths" of the nation's founding.

In Nepal, the Global Peace Association and Himalayan Alliance for Climate Change, with the support of Nepal's Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Tourism, Worldwide Fund for Nature, and others, hosted a major conference, "Peace, Environment and Tourism," that supported models of tourism development that both protected Nepal's fabled environment and fostered peace through cross-cultural encounters.

In Kenya and Malaysia, GPFF-supported programs encouraged "unity in diversity" through greater understanding of the experiences of multi-cultural societies.

2011 Global Peace Convention to Advance Northeast Asia Peace

The November 28-30, 2011 Global Peace Convention in Seoul, Korea aims to bring new focus to the significant issues related to the reunification of the Korean peninsula, with consideration of innovative civil society approaches that promote mutual understanding and cooperation.

The Convention will explore GPFF's value-based approach to peacebuilding and development, and its potential as a starting point for dialogue and the pursuit of common interests for the two Koreas.

National Faith Leaders Summit Convenes in Washington

Saying that America stood at a critical juncture in its history, Dr. Robert Schuller, chairman of the National Faith Leaders Summit, urged religious leaders to get involved by advancing the values that unite the religious community.

Peace, Environment and Tourism Conference Explores New Models for Peace-Building and Development in Nepal

More than 300 national and international delegates advanced new proposals for peace-building, environmental management and tourism at a two-day conference in Pokhara, Nepal, one of the Himalayan nation's premiere tourist destinations. The Peace, Environment, and Tourism (PET) Conference, held on September 20-21, 2011, examined tourism not only as an engine for economic development, but also for its capacity to foster peace through cross-cultural exchanges.
