The Helal, Hisham and Laila Edris ElSwedey University Chair in Islamic
Studies at Xavier University, Cincinnati, OH

Xavier University invites nominations and applications for the Helal, Hisham
and Laila Edris ElSwedey University Chair in Islamic Studies beginning
August 2010. The successful candidate will be able to teach broadly in
Islamic culture, be acquainted with the critical study of both early and


modern Islam, and be able to help the University explore and engage in
interfaith and intercultural dialogue. The disciplinary area of
specialization is open, for example, history, theology, philosophy,
economics or political science, but expertise in and engagement with the
Sunni tradition, both historical and contemporary, is expected. The ideal
candidate would be able to teach in more than one disciplinary area and be
encouraged to develop interdisciplinary courses. In addition to teaching and
scholarship, the Chair will work with existing departments and centers at
Xavier to develop Islamic studies through conferences, speakers series and
other programming. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to help
develop and enrich Xavier's relationship with the Muslim community in
Cincinnati, in particular, with the Islamic Center of Greater Cincinnati
(http://www.icgc.info/) <http://www.icgc.info/%29> . Please indicate any
past experience working with an Islamic Center or evidence of engagement
with local Muslim communities beyond that of a university or college. The
leadership of the Islamic Center of Greater Cincinnati will have input into
the selection process. The candidates may be either an Associate or Full
Professor with a corresponding record of distinguished scholarship and
excellence in teaching. All candidates must possess the following required
qualifications: Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Islamic Studies, scholarly
expertise in Arabic, critical knowledge of historical and contemporary
texts, including the Qur'an and other foundational texts of the Islamic
tradition and expertise in the Sunni tradition. Teaching load is negotiable.
Salary will be competitive and commensurate with rank. Xavier is an
