Egyptians in Seattle raise 5.1m EGP to aid Egypt
Egyptian expats are continuing their support of their country from abroad. In Seattle, Washington, the Egyptian expat community organized a gala dinner to raise funds for Egypt under the theme, ‘Build in collaboration with the Islamic Relief Association’ to fund new programs initiated this year in Egypt aimed as assisting Egypt’s poorest families and orphans.
The dinner and silent auction managed to collect more than a quarter of a million dollars in donations, equivalent to about 5.1 million Egyptian pounds. It also promoted community participation by encouraging children to draw and send cards and letters to orphans in Egypt.
The event was organized by Dr. Jamal Badawi, an Islamic scholar in the United States. Badawi is an Egyptian-born Canadian and is a professor at St. Mary's in Halifax, Canada. He was assisted by Dr. Mahmoud Ayoub, a representative of Rotary International and former trade minister. Over 400 people attended the gathering.
Badawi stressed that Egyptians abroad need to help those at home in these difficult times
