Alexandria, VA - In a letter dated January 12, 2011, THE INSTITUTE on Religion and Public Policy called on President Barack Obama to address the world's deteriorating religious freedom conditions in his upcoming State of the Union Address.

The letter states, "We understand that there are many important items on your agenda for this significant speech; however, the state of religious freedom in the Middle East and around the world in general is highly troubling. Recent months have indicated a shift towards increasingly repressive and violent acts of religious persecution as evidenced by the assassination this past week of Punjab Governor Salman Taseer by a bodyguard who was disturbed by the Governor's disapproval of blasphemy laws."

The letter reminds the president of his own words following the attacks against the Copts in Egypt, and addresses the rising tide of religious discrimination and persecution around the globe.

"It is clear that the magnitude of this issue is one that merits pointed condemnation, which we believe would be best addressed in the State of the Union," the letter goes on to say. "We believe it is critical that you publicly implore the Iraqi and Egyptian governments to prioritize and implement strategies to protect their citizens of all religions, protect vulnerable communities, and prosecute those responsible for these atrocious acts of violence."
