Europe/Radio Liberty is hardly a Cold War relic, as P. J. O'Rourke reports after
a journey to both Kabul and RFE headquarters in Prague, where the
American-funded radio and Internet broadcasts continue to serve huge audiences
in places where independent and locally reported news is hard to find. Duly
acknowledging his "expert" status after his three-day visit to Kabul, O'Rourke
sees ample evidence that RFE ranks high among America's contributions to the
not-so-free world. Thus it's fitting that six decades after its founding, RFE's
Afghan service, Radio Azadi, is fueling the nation's political discourse. Not
everyone agrees, but everyone, including the Taliban, is participating.
