Mosque Near Ground Zero Is Religious-Freedom Issue; Ignorance Feeds Fear

This issue about the so-called "super mosque" being built near ground zero is being blown way out of proportion. It's freedom of religion, no questions asked. As a Muslim, I read the Quran so I may become a better Muslim, and never have I read anything in the Quran that makes me doubt my beliefs. In fact, as I read more about Islam, my faith becomes stronger, despite the fact that I hear opposition of Islam in the news every day.

Underground Bishop John Yang Shudao of Fuzhou died on Saturday at the age of 91. His body has been transferred to his native place Lianjiang County, where his funeral is scheduled for Wednesday. Bishop Yang entered Fuzhou Minor Seminary at the age of 14. He was ordained priest in 1947 but spent most of his life in prison.

A Syrian Catholic Christian, who was abducted a week ago, was killed despite the fact that the family had paid a ransom of 15 thousand US dollars. A criminal extremism case against Maksim Kalinin, a Jehovah's Witness elder in the Volga republic of Mari El, rests on FSB security police surveillance "using a hidden camera in his home without his knowledge", Forum 18 News Service has learnt. "This means that at the current moment all 160,000 Jehovah's Witnesses in Russia cannot feel secure even in their own homes," Jehovah's Witness spokesperson Grigory Martynov remarked to Forum 18 on 20 August.

Pakistani Taliban Kills Three Foreign Christian Aid Workers

A Christian convert from Islam was falsely arrested for cattle theft last weekend in a bid by influential Muslims to stop his Christian activities, area villagers said. Day laborer Abul Hossen, 41, was arrested on Saturday (Aug. 21) for alleged cattle theft in Dubachari village in Nilphamari district, some 300 kilometers (180 miles) northwest of the capital, Dhaka. Christian villagers told Compass that Hossen was the victim of "dirty tricks" by influential Muslims.
