GPFF Gears Up for Nairobi Convention

As the dog days of summer draw to a close in Washington DC, GPFF working groups in the USA, Africa, Asia and Latin America are increasing the pace of preparations for a hectic October and November. The packed fall program will culminate with the annual Global Peace Convention, held this year, together with a Global Peace Festival, in Nairobi, Kenya, from November 17-21.

Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki is patron of the Convention, whose theme this year is: "One Family Under God: Conflict Resolution, Peace and Development," while Prime Minister Raila Odinga is patron of the festival.

The convention draws leaders from government, civil society, and faith-based organizations and will address such topics as peace and development in Africa, and preventing identity-based conflicts. This newsletter kicks off with a story about a big step forward in the character education initiative in Kenya, one of the projects that will be highlighted in the upcoming festival and convention.

October will see Global Peace Festivals held in Nepal, Indonesia, and Paraguay. We have two articles on preparations in Paraguay and one from Indonesia's government website about the upcoming program there.

GPFF's character education program hit new heights in Kenya during this past week, a week when the country signed its new constitution into law. 120 teachers from 33 schools successfully completed our Character Competencies training program. The schools will implement the program in the coming academic year reaching a total of 25,000 students.

Most of the schools sent three teachers to the training, including several deputy principals. Langata High School, some of whose teachers had already undergone the training, sent a total of twenty more teachers including the Principal. Langata serves part of Nairobi's Kibera slum district, which is a part of the constituency represented by Prime Minister Raila Odinga

The Global Peace Festival set for October 22, 2010 was officially launched with the participation of more than 500 guests on August 12, 2010. In this event, various different aspects of the Festival were introduced to the audience. These areas include Social Service programs, Character Education, International Leadership Conference, and the Festival itself.

Jakarta - Indonesia to host the organization of 2010 Global Peace Festival (GPF) for the Asia Pasific region, in Jakarta, 15-17 October 2010. With the theme "Creating a World of Lasting Peace Transcending Differences", the international conference has a purpose to call for world peace. Indonesia is relevant to be a host of such peace conference because its Pancasila, the citizens are plural from every aspect, and loves peace.

In that festival, there will be 400 religious figures from domestic and foreign who will discuss the effort to create world peace and maintain the confidence of each other. In the festival, there will also be many activities to strengthen family and marriage institution as "School of Love" and social work involving thousands of youngsters in several cities in Indonesia. The purpose of this activity is to gather young generations in helping the improvement of social life.
