A report compiled by Office of Inspection within Department of Propagation (Da’wa), warned Dr. Mehmoud Hemdy Zeqzooq, Minister of religious affairs, of the dangers of the Quranists, and their control of the Ministry’s mosques throughout the land.
The report included the results of monitoring more than 20,000 complaints filed by ordinary people, mosques’ attendees who claimed that more than 500 imams throughout the republic, continuously denied the Sunnah, doubted Al Bukhari and Muslim’s books of Hadiths, denied the miracle of Al-Isra’ (the Night Journey) and Al-Me’raaj (Ascension to Heaven), claiming that those miracles are of the myths of thousand and one nights fairy tales, no more no less. They also stressed that the Prophetic Sunnah is not trustworthy, since it was subjected to alterations having been collected more than 200 years after the passing of the prophet, as they threw doubts concerning established accepted notions known to Muslims, like the prophet’s age at the time his prophethood commenced, the number of his wives and refuting all the miracles bestowed upon him by God against his adversaries. Additionally those complaints uncovered (?) that said Imams were receiving, out of the norms aid in spreading those ideas, besides convening suspicious and questionable meetings and get-togethers with certain individuals inside mosques after Isha’ prayer. The report recommended investigating those Imams, stopping them from performing their duties until investigations were conducted due to the gravity of their ideas that might lead to social discord and internal strife.
