Sociology of Islam and Muslim Societies

The notion that it is a threat for Muslims to want Islam to be widespread is based on an assumption that Islam is a bad thing. If you understand Islam to be a mercy to mankind which teaches humans excellent values to live by such as generousity, justice, honesty, charity, compassion and so on then of course you would want to see it spread across Europe and any other place. I cannot understand how any Muslim wouldn't want Islam to be widespread around the world.

I think the more important issue that is being confused here is whether *some* Muslims want to do this by force/coercion/violence or whether Muslims want to see this happen by the voluntary will of the people. I am very happy to put myself in the latter category.

The major hole in those theories about Muslims 'out-breeding' non-Muslims is that they assume that every Muslim that is born is going to be practicing Islam when in fact we can see many examples (the majority in my opinion) of Muslims are not interested in implementing the shari'ah, even on an individual level, never mind a societal or political level.

The term Eurabia is also unhelpful as it has connotations of Europeans being subjugated by an Islamic authority that is based in the Middle East which is something different from what the eamples Esther provides advocate. I think these Eurabia theories are just scaremongering, whipping up more Islamophobia, based on a colonial or post-colonial mentality that mourns the decline of European domination on other parts of the world and fears that the pendulem may be swining the other way which of course it isn't because we know that neo-colonialism is still widespread. In fact, I think these Eurabia theories need to be totally inverted because the reason why thousands of Muslims come to Europe is not because they want to take over and spread Islam, but because they think the West/Europe is an amazing, modern, advanced, civilised, enlightened, the place to be!
