Egypt needs 2-year transitional military council, says Heikal
Israel was very anxious about the developments the Arab world is witnessing and exerted efforts to impede the Arab revolutions to protect its allies, said Mohamed Hassanein Heikal, a high-profile Egyptian author. Heikal said the change was expected as the region’s rulers had surpassed 70 years of age, so they prepared a new generation of sons to inherit the authority. The Arab revolutions, however, managed to overthrow their dreams and achieve real change in the Arab world.

During Al-Jazeera’s ‘The Revolution Speech’ program, Heikal added that the whole world, headed by the U.S., followed the Arab world’s development. They were prepared for the possible scenario of transferring power in the region from father to son. The world, Heikal said, did not expect the region to be changed by the ‘third power’ – the people – who have no experience in leading their countries.
Heikal said the Arab world suffers from conflicts that erupted among different political powers looking to carve out a role in the next stage and protect their interests. He said the countries which managed to achieve real change, such as Egypt, suffer from conflict between the powers which fueled the revolution and the temporary governments which lead the countries.
With such conflict over administration, these countries cannot achieve large projects because such governments have only transitional programs.
Heikal suggested the formation of a transitional military council to lead the country for two years through which the authority will be transferred in a better way. He confirmed that the proposed transitional council would turn the transitional authority to an authority which can take serious steps to achieve real objectives.
