The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences on the Abu Dhabi campus<br />
invites applications for a full-time position in its International Studies<br />
program. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Anthropology or History and be<br />
able to teach interdisciplinary courses on political economy, intellectual<br />
history, and/or popular culture. Evidence of teaching ability and experience<br />

Wallin Postdoctoral Fellowship in International Studies<br />
focus on Islamic World Studies<br />

Macalester College invites applications for a two-year Winston &amp; Maxine<br />
Wallin Postdoctoral Faculty Fellowship from recent PhDs who focus on the<br />
Islamic world, broadly understood. Candidates may come from any<br />
social-science or humanities discipline. Preference will be given to<br />
applicants with the ability to teach transnationally engaged courses which<br />
include an interdisciplinary dimension. The Department of International<br />
Studies at Macalester is a broad and deep nexus for the multi-perspectival<br />
exploration of globalizations old and new, in research and in undergraduate<br />
education. <br />

The Fellowship, whose funding is provided by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation<br />
and Winston &amp; Maxine Wallin Endowment, will begin September 2010 and entails<br />
half-time teaching. The Fellow will offer one course each semester: an<br />
introductory course in the fall, and a more specialized course in the<br />
spring. Candidates should have completed their PhD within the last five<br />
years, be interested in teaching in a rigorous liberal arts environment, and<br />
hold promise of substantial original scholarship. The Fellowship includes a<br />
$57,000 salary plus benefits and funds to support research and travel.<br />

Modern Middle East History: The history department of the University of<br />
Illinois Springfield invites applications for a tenure-track assistant<br />
professor of modern Middle Eastern history beginning in August 2010. Area of<br />
specialization is open, although candidates must be able to teach the<br />
political, economic, and social history of the modern Middle East (since<br />
1800) in comparative and thematic frameworks. Successful candidates will<br />
teach three courses each term. Responsibilities include teaching<br />
lower-division courses in the university&sup1;s general education curriculum,<br />
upper-division and graduate seminars in areas of specialty, and departmental<br />
core courses in historical methods. Candidates should be willing to teach<br />
online as well as on-campus. A PhD in History or Middle Eastern Studies with<br />

The Civilization Sequence Program (CVSP) at the American University of<br />
Beirut (AUB) invites applications for two positions to begin September 15,<br />
2010. The positions are in Islamic philosophy with a comparative interest in<br />
European medieval philosophy and 19th century studies with a comparative<br />
interest in the Middle East. Appointments are normally at the Assistant<br />
Professor level for an initial period of four years. Visiting appointments<br />
and/or appointments at higher ranks may also be considered. Both positions<br />
require a Ph.D. by the time of appointment.<br />

The CVSP is a service program which offers a number of interdisciplinary<br />
undergraduate humanities courses. Course load is normally nine hours a week.<br />
The language of instruction is English. The successful candidate for these<br />
positions will be required to teach core courses from the ancient to<br />
contemporary periods on a regular basis and will also be offered the<br />
opportunity to develop and teach undergraduate courses in service of the<br />
CVSP mission close to his/her research fields. For the core courses, faculty<br />
also participate by giving occasional common lectures to a large<br />
multi-sectioned audience.<br />

applications for a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor in Religious<br />
Studies with a concentration in Islam. The appointment is expected to begin<br />
as early as August 18, 2010. The research specialization is open as to<br />
geographical region, historical period, and disciplinary approach. The<br />
candidate should have training in the academic study of Islam, with<br />
knowledge of Arabic and any other languages relevant to the specialization,<br />
knowledge of approaches and methods in the academic study of religion, and<br />
familiarity with the study of religion as pursued in a state university.<br />
Candidates must show evidence of commitment to continuing research and<br />
publication, as well as teaching excellence. University-level teaching<br />
experience preferred (which may include Teaching Assistantships). Ph.D. or<br />
ABD expected by start date of appointment.<br />

Duties include full participation in the teaching, research, and service<br />
responsibilities of the Department of Religious Studies and cooperation with<br />
related programs and area studies centers throughout the University. The<br />
standard University teaching load is two, three-credit hour courses per<br />
semester. The candidate is expected to contribute to the teaching mission of<br />
the Department through regular offering of a range of undergraduate and<br />
graduate courses on Islam, and courses in theory and method of religious<br />
studies at the introductory and advanced levels. Salary will be competitive<br />
