Departmental Lecturer in Islamic Art and Architecture

We are seeking a Departmental Lecturer in Islamic Art and Architecture (c. 650 – 1200 CE), for 12 months from October 2017 to cover research leave. The Lecturer will be a member of the Faculty of Oriental Studies and will be eligible to apply for Research Membership of Common Room at Wolfson College. He/she will join the Khalili Research Centre (KRC), one of the leading international centres for the study of Islamic art and architecture.
The Departmental Lecturer will give lectures, classes and for postgraduate degree students in Islamic Art and Archaeology, and may give small group or individual teaching to undergraduates. Overall teaching contact time is estimated at 10 hours per week during term.  She/he will assist with admissions to the subject; supervise dissertations for undergraduates and graduates; and set and mark examinations.  She/he will also assist with convening a research seminar; and contribute to the faculty's and KRC's research programme.
To be successful you must hold a relevant postgraduate qualification (preferably a doctorate) in a subject related to Islamic art and architecture, preferably with a specialisation in the central Arab lands between c. 650 and 1200 CE, and demonstrate experience of research, or the potential for advanced research, in that field, with a publication record appropriate to your stage of career.  You should possess excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills, and demonstrate a willingness to undertake administrative tasks.  Ideally you would also have prior teaching experience, including class teaching and small-group teaching, and be able to teach using Arabic primary sources; knowledge of Persian and/or Ottoman Turkish may be an advantage.
